Varnishes - Two Component

Two-component yacht varnish is a professional marine clear-coating system mixed from component A and component B before application. At Skipper’s Paints, we supply seven Skipper’s Line two-component varnish products in this category: Acriglass UV, Poliglass, Polimatt, Poliglass Gel UV, Polisatin, Space Clear 1/3 UV and Underglass. The live product pages show technical data including mixing ratio, pot life, coverage, dust-dry time and recoat time.

Skipper’s Line premium two-component yacht varnishes are manufactured in Italy and supplied to the UK market by Skipper (UK) Ltd from Beacon Boatyard in Rochester, Kent. This category is marked “For Professional Use ONLY” on the live Skipper’s Paints site, so every product should be selected and applied with the relevant product page, technical data sheet and safety data sheet to hand.

Key facts:

  • The live two-component category lists seven products.
  • The category is marked “For Professional Use ONLY”.
  • Every listed two-component product page shows a pot life and mixing ratio.
  • Products cover high gloss, matt, satin, high-build, high-flowing and wood-sealing uses.
  • The live page does not include a verified “lasts X years” service-life claim.

When should you use two-component yacht varnish?

Use two-component yacht varnish when the project needs a professional-use system with controlled mixing, defined pot life and technical application discipline. The Skipper’s Line two-component category is positioned for premium protection, high-gloss finishes, durability, UV resistance and chemical protection in demanding marine environments.

The right product depends on the finish and surface. Acriglass UV is the high-gloss UV-focused option. Poliglass is the fast-drying “6 Coats a Day” varnish. Poliglass Gel UV is a high-build option where film thickness is important. Polimatt and Polisatin are interior matt and satin systems. Space Clear 1/3 UV is a high-flowing clear varnish for professional brush or spray application. Underglass is a wood sealing varnish.

Two-component systems are less forgiving than single-pack products because the mixed material must be used within the stated pot life. Skipper’s Painting Tips guidance says two-component epoxy and polyurethane systems require temperatures above 10°C to achieve correct chemical curing and specified performance, and mixed material must not be used once pot life has been exceeded.

How do you apply two-component yacht varnish?

Apply two-component yacht varnish only after checking the product page, technical data sheet and safety data sheet for the specific product. Each Skipper’s Line two-component varnish has its own mixing ratio, pot life, thinner guidance, coat count and recoat window.

Start with preparation. Skipper’s Painting Tips guidance says all surfaces must be clean, dry, thoroughly degreased, free from salt, oil or moisture, and abraded as specified to promote mechanical adhesion. Application should be carried out in a controlled, dust-free environment and avoided in direct sunlight, rainfall, mist, temperatures below 5°C or relative humidity above 80%.

For two-component systems, mix Sol A and Sol B at the stated ratio. Most products in this category use a 2:1 ratio; Space Clear 1/3 UV uses a 3:1 ratio. Once mixed, apply within the stated pot life. Do not use mixed material once pot life has been exceeded.

After mixing component A and component B, wait 15 to 20 minutes before beginning application. This induction period allows the chemical reaction to begin, ensuring correct cure and final film properties. Once mixing is complete, use the material within the stated pot life, typically 2 to 6 hours depending on the product. Mixed material that exceeds pot life must not be used.

Use only the specified Skipper’s thinners. Brush and spray reductions vary by product, so do not assume one thinner schedule applies across the whole category. Acriglass UV, for example, lists Thinner 205 or Thinner 201 for brush application and Thinner 203 or Thinner 201 for spray application. Space Clear 1/3 UV varies thinner choice by temperature.

Common questions about two-component varnish

Can you apply two-component yacht varnish over one-component?

No. Skipper’s Line technical guidance is explicit: never apply a two-component product over an existing one-component product. The two systems are not compatible and applying two-component over one-component risks adhesion failure, cracking and finish defects.

If you are moving from a one-component to a two-component varnish system, strip the existing varnish back to bare wood, by scraping, sanding with 80 to 100 grit sandpaper, or using Svernigraf paint remover, then prepare the surface as bare wood before applying the chosen two-component system.

How long does two-component yacht varnish last?

Skipper’s does not publish a fixed service-life figure for the two-component varnish category because lifespan varies with substrate, application quality, UV exposure, salt exposure and maintenance regime. Two-component systems chemically cure rather than air-dry, which gives significantly greater durability, chemical resistance and UV stability than one-component varnishes, particularly the UV-filter-formulated products in the range, Acriglass UV, Poliglass Gel UV and Space Clear 1/3 UV.

What’s the difference between Acriglass UV, Poliglass, Polimatt, Poliglass Gel UV, Polisatin, Space Clear 1/3 UV and Underglass?

Acriglass UV is the high-gloss UV-focused professional varnish. Poliglass is the fast-drying “6 Coats a Day” varnish. Poliglass Gel UV is the high-build clear option. Polimatt is the matt interior varnish. Polisatin is the satin interior varnish. Space Clear 1/3 UV is the high-flowing clear varnish for professional brush or spray application. Underglass is the wood sealing varnish.

Do you need to thin two-component yacht varnish?

Yes, where the product page specifies thinning. Each product page lists its own brush and spray thinning guidance. Acriglass UV, Poliglass, Polimatt, Poliglass Gel UV, Polisatin, Space Clear 1/3 UV and Underglass all list thinner recommendations, but the percentages and thinner numbers vary. Always follow the product page and technical data sheet rather than using a single generic thinning ratio.
